STRATEGIES TO HIGH ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS: by Dickson

HOW TO STUDY SMART
Things You'll Need:
  • Drive
  • Time
  • motivation

1. Step 1
Set up some time to study each day. Put it on a schedule so you already have it mapped out how much time you will need.

2. Step 2
Having a schedule is also a very important part. If you do not map out you time wisely it can be very easy for time to slip away.

3. Step 3
Join a study group. Chances are, if you don't understand it someone else will. When studying a group effort can also help things move along quickly. Especially if you break the assignment up and give a portion to each person.

4. Step 4
Breaks. While it is good to stay focused and study, one must set aside some time to relax and let everything they have learned sink in. Perhaps go for a jog or a run, something to get the blood flowing. Then when you are down with that, you will be more ready to study.

5. Step 5
Don't procrastinate. As much fun as it is to put things off, the closer it gets, the more stressed you will be. To avoid the stress entirely, go ahead and do the assignment. Or break it up into portions where it doesn't seem like such a huge load.

6. Step 6
Once you have fell into a pattern, you will get used to studying and it won't seem so horrible. Because you will already have that time set aside for it.

7. Step 7
Take your time. Don't rush through an assignment if you are tired of studying, take a break.

How to Balance  fun and Academics
Instructions

1. Step 1
First, at the beginning of each week of classes, check and see what is coming in the week. Observe what homework is due, see if you have any papers to write, and what tests you need to prepare for.

2. Step 2
After realizing what you must accomplish in the week, make a mental note of the important assignments (i.e. tests, papers). Then write down which days and times you are going to study and which you are going to do homework. Remember that most social events occur in the evening, so plan to maybe wake up an hour earlier to get some work done. Also plan to do your assignments between classes. Do the work for a certain class directly after leaving that class. The subject matter is fresh on your mind.

3. Step 3
Stick to your schedule! When you are working, don't have distractions. Go to the library and find a quiet spot where you can focus on your assignments. Don't open up social networks, such as Facebook or MySpace, on the computer. They WILL distract you. It is alright to take breaks and give your mind a rest but remember that you must get your assignments done to have fun later.

4. Step 4
After following these steps, you should have your work done, understand the material, and still have your nights open!! Go out and have fun! But be sure to get back in time to get a good amount of sleep so you can do the same the next day.

5.step 5
Know your strengths and weakness. This helps you join or ignore a fun club or activity.

6.step 6
Set the priorities first. Academic first and fun bustles second do not do the opposite.

7 step 7
Don''t forget that getting high grade is the reason of your existence at the college or university not fun.

HOW TO GET A HIGH GPA IN UNIVERSITY

1. Step 1
Choosing your courses. If You have a choice between two professors don't just guess which name sounds "kind of nice". Go to Ratemyprofessors.com and read what other students have to say about that professor. Sometimes the kind of professor you have makes the difference between a C+ and an A.

2. Step 2
DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT listen to those 'wise' sophomores and juniors that say "Oh, that class, you never have to go to it, just read the notes before the exam and you should be fine." You'll meet tons of students like these who brag about how they got an A and never went to class. Trust me, These students will soon take a class they under-rate and end up getting F' s eventually. The general classes and electives are one thing, but upper-level classes you need for your major are way different in academic level.

3. Step 3
Skipping classes is the last thing you want to do. Just suck it up and go, even if the professor has a monotonous way of speaking and all you want to do is doze off. Make yourself interested in the material and listen intently. If you have access to the slides the professor is showing stop scribbling down everything he/she says. Just listen and try to understand. TEXTING and daydreaming while sipping on coffee does NOT count as going to class. Ask anyone with a perfect GPA and you'll come to find out that they have strict policies about attending every class.

4. Step 4
Keep track of your exams and deadlines. There are tons of ways to keep track. Your cell phone , google calender, weekly planners, windows calendar. Take your pick and check everyday. No, that's not a typo it's everyday, not week. When you look at your deadlines your mind is keeping in sync and you never have to think "oh my God, I think that paper is due this week!"... This prevents stress you really can do without.

5. Step 5
Make a file that keeps all your course grading guidelines and put your grades in as you go along. This way you can easily see how you're doing and it's easy to predict your grade, or what you need for a certain grade. Here's an example:
CELL BIOLOGY
MIDTERM 1 (25% OF GRADE) GRADE: 87
MIDTERM 2 (25% OF GRADE) GRADE: 93
HOMEWORK (10% OF GRADE) GRADE:
FINAL (40% OF GRADE) GRADE: need to score over 88

6. Step 6
CRAMMING and PROCRASTINATION are your enemies. If you study along the way, just half an hour for each lecture you'll be amazed at how much easier your life will be. Your memory recall will be amazing. In other words, while your classmates are cramming and trying to remember things the night before the exam, all you have to do is read and say "Oh, I remember that". You'll actually start looking forward to the exam! Never underestimate the power of timely preparation.

7. Step 7
Papers, Homework, and other assignments with deadlines are crucial. If you do them a day before they are due, they are obviosly not going to be your best work. You want to be the best. Imagine that one student that's going to do better than you just because they started before you. It's a competition, you want to be the best of the best.

8. Step 8
Studying in your room/dorm with your cell phone vibrating and your facebook page and chat window open hardly qualifies as 'study time'. If it's hard to get yourself in study mode, always do something to alter the mood. Put your cell on silent, close the computer and clear your desk of clutter. Have a little ritual before you study that gets you ready for it. Even if it's something silly like turning around three times and taking a deep breath. Just stick to it.

9. Step 9
Be organized and do everything in a timely manner. Do I sound like your mom? Well it'll take a lot of stress out of your college life. If you're worrying about the credit payment you missed and your room is a mess, there's something wrong. A messy room reflects a messy mind. Get it together! Ask ANY person who is middle aged about some things they regret and "not doing as well as I could do in school" will always be on the top of their list. Live without regrets and get those A's like your life depends on it, becuase it really does.

10. Step 10
Easy classes are there for you to get A' s! So many students find an excuse to slack when they are taking an easy class. Sorry to be the messenger of bad news, but your classes are not going to get any easier, you need every A you can grab before you get to the hard classes. It's proven to be easier to slack in easy classes than it is in harder ones. So don't fall into the trap.

11. Step 11
Last and definetly not least, be positive. The more you visualize getting those A's, the more motivated you'll feel to study. Hang a post-it on your dresser that says "A, here I come". Your concious memory has a very short attention span, but your subconsiounce is the master of keeping things 'in mind'. So you'll find that you make time for the studying that needs to be done, without distracting yourself with other activities.
